How to Go Green When RVing

Some people have the idea that RVing is not environmentally friendly. However, there’s been research conducted that found RVing to be a better green option than other forms of travel. And, it puts a lot more control in your hands. If green RVing is important to you, there’s lots of things you can do to support that:

Reduce water usages

Reducing the amount of water that you use is a great way to be environmentally friendly while RVing, just like when you’re at home. Some ways that you can do this are to replace your faucets and showerheads. You can also implement strategies such as taking navy showers where you turn the water off after you get wet and keep it off until you’re ready to rinse off.

Another strategy is to catch any water in a pitcher or bowl that runs in the sink while you wait for the warm water to show up. You can then use this water for other purposes or even return it to the freshwater tank. If you’ve ever been boondocking before you know plenty of water-saving tips that you can start to implement all the time while RVing.

Solar panels

There are plenty of RV options that come with solar panels and if you already have an RV, you can have solar panels added. One example of this is the 2020 Pleasure Way Plateau shown below. It’s a Class B camper van that has 4 solar panels making it an ideal option if you enjoy boondocking.

Find a shady spot in the summer or sunny spot during colder temperatures

Another way you can be more green while RVing is to reduce the amount of time that you need to use your AC or heater. The first way you can do this is by choosing campgrounds based on the climate. Avoid visiting colder states during the winter months or hitting hot states in the heat of summer.

Another way that you can avoid having to use your heater or AC is to carefully choose your campsite. If the temperature is hotter, look for a campsite that has a lot of shade to help keep the temperature inside your RV cooler. And, if it’s a colder month, try to avoid the shady spots so you can benefit from the natural heat of the sunlight.

Stop using disposables

It might be easy to use disposables while traveling in your RV, but it’s definitely not environmentally friendly. There are plenty of dinnerware options to choose from for your RV. You’ll want to choose something that’s durable, break-resistant, and lightweight. It’s also helpful to find something that’s dishwasher and microwave safe if you have those options in your RV.

Only bring what you need

RVs have come a long way in providing RVers with plenty of storage space. It’s easier than ever to bring along everything you need and want. But the more you bring, the more weight is added to your RV causing you to burn more fuel.

If you want to focus on being green while RVing, think about what you really need for your RV trip and leave everything else at home. If you’re a full-time RVer, take inventory of what you actually use and get rid of everything else to lighten your load.

Buy the right RV

While all new RVs have more green options than those of the past, there are some RVs that are more environmentally friendly than others. For example, this is something that Jayco takes seriously and why they have theĀ Jayco EcoAdvantage. They have RVs available in all different models so you can find what you’re looking for whether you want a Class A or a camper van. And, they’re not the only RV manufacturer focused on supporting green initiatives in the RV world.
