6 Questions to Ask When RV Shopping

When it comes to buying a new RV, you probably have a lot of questions. And, if it’s your first time RV shopping, you might be concerned about not even knowing what questions to ask. Take a deep breath and relax, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s start by breaking questions down into a few different groups. Remember, buying an RV is like buying a car and a house. That means some of the questions that you need to ask are going to be the same and some are going to be different. There are also some questions that you need to ask yourself and some that you will want to ask the RV dealer.

Questions to ask yourself

1. What are my RV needs?

The first thing you need to do is start by thinking about what you need in an RV. A family of six that decides to become fulltime RVers are going to have different needs than a single person in their 20’s looking for adventure on the road or a retired couple looking to take an occasional trip.

There is no generic “right or wrong” when it comes to choosing an RV. You have to consider your needs and how you want to use it. Think about this before you even go and start walking through models to get an idea of what you’re looking for. It’s easy to get carried away by the exciting features of an RV and convince yourself to buy something that’s bigger and more expensive than you really need. And, it’s also easy to have sticker shock and then convince yourself to buy an RV only based on price and end up regretting it because it doesn’t fit your needs.

Always start by thinking through your own situation:

  • Do I have a vehicle to tow an RV or do I need a motorhome?
  • How many people need to sleep in here?
  • Where do I plan on using it?
  • Am I living in it or taking it on the occasional trip?
  • What comforts are important to me?
2. What is my budget?

As mentioned above, you don’t want to choose an RV just based on price and nothing else. But this is real life and we get that you have a budget to work with. Your budget might be a lot more than other people’s or a lot less. The only thing that matters is that you know how much you are comfortable spending. And, don’t forget to take the extra expenses into consideration such as insurance.

Questions to ask the dealer?

3. What’s the actual cost?

If you’ve ever bought a car before then you know how this process works. It’s similar. There is a price listed on the RV, but that’s not really the final cost. There are additional fees that will be added in before you close the deal just like when you buy a new or used vehicle. It’s important to understand what your price is going to “out the door”. That means your final price with everything included. Make sure to ask for this number.

4. How does financing work?

If you plan on financing your RV through the dealership then it’s important that you understand exactly how the financing program works. It’s important that you don’t sign anything until you understand the details of it. One of the questions that you are going to want to find out is if you are allowed to pay off the loan early without paying a penalty. You also want to make sure you have a good understanding of when your payment will be due and how you are supposed to pay it.

5. What type of warranty do I get?

Just like a new car, your new RV will come with a warranty. You want to make sure you understand what is covered and what is not. Make sure you understand how the warranty works and what you need to do in order to use the warranty if needed.

6. Are there any service package options

Some dealers will have service packages that you can purchase in addition to your warranty. These can be a good way to save money on any of the regular maintenance work that your RV will need. Ask what options if any are offered. Even if the dealer doesn’t offer a service package, make sure you understand what regular maintenance needs to be done on your RV.
